Advaith's Birthday Bash

Adhoo  turned two this 13th March. This year, as promised earlier, we wanted to throw out a small party for our little toddy so he can get to play and see new friends.
We booked The Club House in our community itself for Saturday March 12th. We planned for an earlier celebration as we did not want to make him and all the other kids exhausted at the end of the weekend, making it difficult for the moms n dads to head to work on Monday.

The party program was scheduled around 3 pm to 5 pm that day. Right from morning 9 am , Ravi and Ganesh (Adhoo's latest lovable Mama) were busy setting up the hall for the party, picking up the catering and blowing up the balloons.
Adhoo was all awake and ready to party by 12 pm.

We headed to the House and by 3 pm, he started getting company with the first arrival of Priya Ramesh n kids. Right away he was in all josh running behind Surya and Anjali and playing with the balloons with them. Later joined Murali-Shobi with Sthanav.
Sthanav took his time to warm up and get into the crowd but later turned out to be the star winner of the game hosted!!

Then there was Prasanth Gayathri with Baby Akshad. He is too small to get whats going on but still never missed a glimpse of the fun around him. Cute as a cupcake!

Finally cake cutting ceremony commenced with the arrival of the Chief guests Sudheepa n Natraj. Adhoo's cake this time was THOMAS TRAIN theme. The moment the cake box was opened, he fell in love with it right away!

While, cutting the cake and singing " Happy Birthday", all the while, he was eying the train on the cake and wanted to take that. As soon as the candles were blown, he plunged and got hold of the train ! Did he go away with that? NO! He wanted to leave the train on the tracks (Iced on the cake)! What a Fun!

After a small bite of the train cake, we played couple of games so that the kids and their parents get all energized for the whole day! We started of with "Who pins the Lion's Nose?"
The ultimate fun of this game lied on the fact that None of us knew that we have to aim for the Lion's Nose all through the game and we still ended up playing it! LOL!!

Then there was Thomas Pinata..similar to our Indian "Uri Adi". Kids Version of this game was not to beat the Pinata, rather pull out the right string to bring down the surprise!!
And the very second Participant after Baby Akshad, was Baby Sthanav who got it right on the first go!! YAY!!

You might be wondering who were the winners of the previous game? Well everyone were the winners for all the games!

We finally opened the Snack Bar which comprised of the menu,

Masal Vadai,Kothu Parotta ,Chips, Juices , cake and little of the Vegetable Briyani which was all parceled up ready to go in had for the guests dinner time saving them time to go back and prepare, rather they as well us we could rest after a long days fun!

The take away bag just got bigger and better by the end of the party. Thanks to all our friends out there who lent their hand to even clean up the place and give the Club House back spic and span.
By 6 pm , we all were forced to leave the hall as it was almost closing time. After , throwing away the garbage, locking up the doors, returning things back home.. we bid good bye to each other.

The moment we came home, that's when we realized how tired we all were. Adhoo , who skipped his nap time too, ended up sleeping right way after a hot shower and dinner. He was too lazy to get up early the next day, being his ACTUAL DOB.
And so were we... The party hangover hasn't got yet and we are still in the same mood and hyped about it.

Coming to the lovely presents offered by his friends, All of them turned out to be his favorite, Be it Manny the Mechanic or the Favorite Fire Truck or his yet another Bicycle!

He is enjoying one toy at a time, starting with Fire Truck.
On his actual DOB, like said earlier, it was less active day as we were all sleepy and tired. The only good thing we ended doing that day was to go to his Hospital and take a snap with him , which we missed to do 2 years ago.

Looking at the hospital , brought back all that precious moments of our lives that took place 2 years ago and we ended up sharing them with Adhoo's Uncle, Ganesh.
Later that day, we reach Walnut creek where we finished our so called dinner : Sweet and Sundal, and returned home by 11 just to hit the bed and be sound asleep.

The most memorable Birthday Weekend we ever could have! Thank you friends for making our day! You all deserve one big applause! Bravo!!

Take a Look At the Album...

MAHASHIV RATHIRI SPECIAL : CARROT ALMOND KHEER

Carrot Almond Kheer.

Our ShivRathiri this year, turned out to be a simple stay at home one , yet The Almighty Brings in lots of favors for us. We have been lately hearing so many good news across, some of which which I will be sharing with you all.
I had to offer the Lord an evening prasadam. Mu husband and I lately prefer to have something that's both healthy to us and at the same time is a good offering to the Lord.
In that list, he loves Carrot kheer a lot!
I wanted to serve both the Lord and my family with a little variation of this Carrot Kheer and so emerged this CARROT ALMOND KHEER.

Things Needed:
  • Carrot : 2
  • Milk : 1 cup
  • Evaporated Milk : ½ cup (optional, can be substituted with more sugar if needed)
  • Sugar : ¼ cup
  • Cashew : 10
  • Almond : 10 ( soaked in Luke warm water for an hour)
  • Saffron : pinch (optional)
  • Cardamon Powder : pinch
  • Raisins : Few
  • Ghee: Little
Method:
  1. Pressure cook carrot till just a whistle or two with very little water
  2. Don't throw the water away. We can use it in the preparation for making kheer.
  3. Peel the skin off the Almonds and grind to a fine paste.
  4. Add the cooked and cooled carrots and grind to a thick smooth paste.
  5. Fry the cashews n raisins in ghee. Keep aside.
  6. Add the ground paste to the same vessel and give a quick stir for a sec. Add the water from the cooked carrot and bring it to a light boil.
  7. Add sugar, evaporated milk. Preboil 1 cup milk before hand in microwave to avoid being burnt at the bottom when directly boiled.
  8. When the kheer comes to a boil , add the milk and mix well. bring it to the desired consistency. Simmer once and turn off.
  9. Add cardamon powder, saffron, fried nuts at the end.

Prasadam Ready for the Lord.

“Some like it hot, some like it cold, some like it store in the fridge 1 week old!! :) Either way its fine!”

Try it out and Don’t forget to post your 100% honest feedback so I can try on some more simple improvisations just like this! Happy Maha Shivrathiri to one and all!

Vaikunta Ekadasi is an important festival dedicated to Lord Vishnu in the Tamil month of Margazhi (December-January). Vaikunda Ekadesi festival is of great significance at the Tirupati Balaji Temple, Srirangam Sri Ranganatha Temple and at the Bhadrachalam Temple. In Kerala, it is known as Swarga Vathil Ekadashi.Today is that auspicious day.

The significance of Vaikunta Ekadasi can be traced back to the Padma Purana. The Purana indicates that Lord Vishnu took the form of ‘Ekadasi’ – female energy – to kill demon Muran. This happened during the month of Margazhi. Impressed by ‘Ekadasi,’ Lord Vishnu told her that whoever worships him on this day will reach ‘Vaikunta’ (heaven).

Like all Ekadasi days, devotees fast on this day and observe vigil the whole night. Some people indulge in meditation, Japa and singing of Hari Kirtan. Rice is avoided during ekadashi days as it is believed that the demon Mura finds a dwelling in the rice eaten on Ekadasi day.

It is widely believed that the gates to the heaven open - the Gate of Vaikuntha - on the Vaikunta Ekadasi day. It is one of the most auspicious days in Lord Vishnu Temples in South India.

The ‘Vaikunta Dwaram’ or ‘the gate to the heaven’ is opened on this day. This is the passage encircling the innermost sanctum of the Lord. Scores of devotees queue up to pass through the Gate of Vaikunta in the temples.

Vaikunta Ekadasi occurs in December or early January.

How to observe Vaikunta Ekadasi?

Vaikunta Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day in Margazhi Shukla Paksha in Tamil Calendar and in Telugu Calendar the same period is Pushya Shukla Paksha.

Things needed for Puja and Prayer

  • A picture or photo or idol of Lord Vishnu
  • Fruits
  • Tulsi leaves
  • Betel leaves (optional)
  • Betel nuts (optional)
  • Yellow bananas
  • Unbroken coconut (optional)

Observance

  • Wake up early in the morning. Take bath and offer prayers.
  • You can perform a simple puja to Lord Vishnu at home by offering fruits and Tulsi leaves.
  • You can just light the lamp and prayer or meditate for few minutes – or the normal ritual you do daily. Only difference is that today it is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
  • If there is a Vishnu temple nearby visit the temple and witness morning pujas and rituals.
  • Complete fast or upavasam on the day is the main observance.

Fasting

Fasting for 24 hours. It is believed that a partial or total abstinence from food on Ekadasi is rewarded with bliss.

If you have any health problem or are taking medicines, please consult your doctor before deciding on fasting. You can also opt for a partial fast by avoiding food made of rice.

Do not eat food made from rice on Ekadashi.

Evening Prayers

  • Take a bath in the evening.
  • Repeat the morning puja to Vishnu
  • Visit Vishnu temple and witness the evening puja and rituals.

Prayers for Vaikunta Ekadasi

  • Vishnu Ashotharam
  • Vishnu Sahasranamam
  • Or Simple Chanting of – Om Namo Narayana

No Sleep

Staunch devotees who observe Vaikunta Ekadasi fasting do not sleep on the day. They spend the whole night at Vishnu temples or by singing prayers or listening stories dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Next Day Morning

The fast is broken on the next day (Dwadashi) after taking bath. Offer prayers to Lord Vishnu by lighting a lamp and then you can break the fast.

What can be eaten on Ekadasi?? (for Partial Fasters)

The traditional approach is to abstain from food completely on the day. But nowadays a complete fast is not possible for many people. Such people consume certain food items on the Ekadasi day and observe only a partial fast.

It is believed that demon Mura found a dwelling place in the rice and Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of Ekadasi to annihilate Mura. Therefore devotees who fast on the Ekadashi day avoid food made from grains.

Many devotees due to several reasons – like health and job commitments – observe partial fast on the day. Such people avoid non-vegetarian and food items made from beans, pulses and grains, especially rice.

The food that can be consumed on the Ekadasi day includes fresh and dried fruits, milk products, vegetables and nuts.

As the list of Ekadasi food expands there will be new issues cropping up like – Are you sure this can be consumed on Ekadasi.

So the golden rule is avoid pulses and grains on Ekadasi.

Drink lots of water and eat fresh and dried fruits.

In Hinduism, Upvaas is meant to bring a person close to Brahman. So forget about the rules and regulations and what you are going to gain from the Ekadashi fast. Spend the day in purifying the mind and body.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RAVI

December 21st has become one of the most "Special Days" of my life!!

I am greatful for this day, 'coz if not for this day, several years ago,I wouldn't have got such a wonderful person in my life!!Yes!! This day is the day my sweetheart was born.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RAVI!!

What a wonderful husband you are!
I love you in every way.
Just look how we've gotten this far,
and getting better every day.
You mean the world to me
and yet so much more.
Here's hoping your birthday
will be one you'll adore.
This year it has become even more special as Ravi is entering another important role in his life...FATHERHOOD!!
It was SUNDAY! what more can I ask for?? Very special isn't it??
The day started of with a series of phone calls from nears and dears wishing him and blessing him for his birthday.
With him busy talking on the phone, I started preparing the lunch for the day.
We could have had a treat in a wonderful restaurant. But unfortunately, these days as I am in my third trimester, I am unable to have meals outside home. The spicy food outside doesn't do any good for my health.
Plus, Ravi always prefers to have home food.
So I made lunch at home. The combinations might seem a little absurd. But to me the only thing that mattered, was Ravi's favourites.
So Lunch menu was made.

The menu was as follows:
  • Sweet of the day: Kesari
  • Sundal
  • Brinjal curry : Ravi always longed for Brinjal curry for quite sometime now. So made it Exclusively for him.Not for me!!!
  • Moar Kulambhu : Another favourite dish of Ravi's.
  • Appalam & Thamarai thandu fry.
  • Kothamalli Thuvayal.

Having had this wonderful feast at home,"undha mayakkam" nu solluvanga illa??? That's what happened exactly!! Ravi was too tired to do anything further!! (LOL)
Evening, we headed to his collegue's home to share the sweet and sundal.
After that, we all went to the Lakshmi Ganapathy Temple in San Jose. We had a wonderful darshan at the temple.

It was a cold and rainy evening , so not staying out much, both our families headed back to our homes.

Though the day was not that surprising and grand like last year, we yet had a peacful celebration.

Hope all you readers out there wish their best for my dear hubby!!

Krishna Jayanthi 2008

I Know its been a long time since I havent updated my blog. The reason is of course GOOD NEWS!! We are expecting a new family member by next March!! So I am in my resting phase , taking leave away from computers.
Since Today is
KRISHNA JAYANTHI (23.08.2008) I wanted to share the small celebration I performed. What is this day??

Maha Vishnu took various avatars to protect the mortal world from the evildoers and sinners. One such incarnation was his birth as the child of King Vasudeva and Queen Devaki Devi. Gokul Ashtami is the birthday of Lord Krishna. It falls on the 8th day of the dark half of the month of 'Bhadrapada' (August-September) and is one of the greatest of all Hindu festivals. Lord Krishna was born at midnight.

A twenty-four hour fast is observed on this day, which is broken at midnight. The festival is called in different names as "Krishna Jayanti", "Janma Ashtami", "Krishnaashtami" , "Gokul Ashtami", and as "Sri Jayanti".

Birth of Lord Krishna The myth connected to the birth of Lord Vishnu is as follows. Vasudeva was the chief of 'Shooras' and married Devaki one of the seven daughters of Devaka. They were very happy, for none had ever seen so fine a man and a wife matched in such perfect harmony.

'Kansa' (also known as 'Kamsa') was the son of Ugrasena. Though his father Ugrasena was the King, Kansa himself ruled the kingdom. He was more wicked and had no respect for law, human or divine. The divine Sage Narada once, came to Kansa and advised him not to disregard the law of 'Dharma' and foretold, that the eighth child of Devaki would slay him, if he continued to be wicked and revengeful.

Frightened at the prophecy of Narada, Kansa confined the newly married Vasudeva and Devaki in Gajaraja palace with a condition that every child of Devaki, as it was born, should be handed over to him. In obedience of the promise Vasudeva handed over six of his children one after one whom the cruel Kansa killed mercilessly. Devaki again became pregnant, and she gave birth to a boy.

With the help of 'Ganga Charya' and 'Akura' he was saved by showing a dead body of a new-born girl beside Devaki. Kansa did not take it seriously, as this was seventh child of Devaki. The seventh child of Devaki was stealthily sent to Gokul and was growing under the great care and affection of Rohini, the elder wife of Vasudeva. Rohini was living as a guest of Nanda at Gokhul. They named the boy as "Balarama". During the course of their nine years confinement, Vasudeva and Devaki never failed in their devotion and always talked of the Lord and his Grace. Devaki was expecting her eighth child. Surely, the prophecy of sage Narada and the promise of Veda Vyasa began to show the signs of coming true. It was the eighth day of the dark half of the month of 'Sravana' (also spelt as Shravan) and there was a thunder and lightning pouring torrential rains and the roads were blocked with water.

Devaki tingling with ecstasy gave birth to a child when the moon entered the house of 'Vrishabha' at the constellation of the star Rohini on Wednesday the 8th day of the second fortnight of the month of Sravana, which corresponds to the month of "Bhadrapada Krishnapaksha" according to the "Barhaspatyamana", in the year of 'Visvavasu', 5,I72 years ago (from I945), which means 3227 BC.

In the pitched darkness, Vasudeva wrapped the child in a woollen garment, kept it in a basket and lifting the basket on his shoulder crossed the river Yamuna and handed over the child, with the basket to Ganga Charya, the family priest and Nanda, the chief of Gokul Yadavas waiting on the opposite bank. In return, Ganga Charya gave another basket of a new born daughter of Nanda to Vasudeva who carried back the baby to the place of his confinement, as was pre-planned.

Kansa was unable to sleep the whole night due to the anxiety to have a look at the eighth child of Devaki and drove to the palace where Vasudeva and Devaki were in prison. After assuming that the eighth child of them being a daughter, the prophecy of Narada proved incorrect and Kansa was very happy.

Nanda's wife Yashoda who had fainted at the time of her delivery never knew, what all has happened in the night and when she came to her senses, Rohini handed over the child to her. Since Nanda and Yashoda were not having any children, quite for some time, the birth of the boy made the people of Gokul with wild delight and joy and the boy was named as Krishna with appropriate rituals.

Kansa was constantly haunted by the fear that some child might have overlooked by 'Putana', a close confidant of Kansa. He came to know the belated birth of a boy to Nanda and Yashoda and summoned Putana to kill him. But Putana could not succeed in her deed and was later killed by Krishna. Kansa therefore summoned 'Trinavrit', a bird catcher to kidnap Krishna.

When, Trinavrit reached Gokul, there was a storm of sand and it was very difficult to anybody to withstand. Taking advantage of the storm, Trinavrit caught hold of Krishna. Krishna too held him tightly leaving him dead. Various brave acts during the childhood days of Krishna are depicted in the holy books.

The eighth Avatara, Krishna, who has become the Beloved of India and the world at large, had a threefold objective: to destroy the wicked demons to play the leading role in the great war fought on the battlefield of Kurukshetra (where he delivered His wonderful message of the Gita) and to become the centre of a marvellous development of the Bhakti schools of India.

A Peculiar Feature On the holy day of Gokul Ashtami, the ladies in South India decorate their houses beautifully, ready to welcome the Lord. They prepare various sweetmeats and offer them to the Lord. Butter was Krishna's favourite, and this is also offered. Shrikhand is specially prepared on the occasion of Gokulashtami festival. From the doorway to the inner meditation room of the house the door is marked with a child's footprints, using some dour mixed with water. This creates the feeling in them that the Lord's own Feet have made the mark.

The Festivity People treat this day as one of very great rejoicing. There is recitation of the "Bhagavatam", singing and praying everywhere. Temples are decorated for the occasion, Kirtans are sung, bells are rung, the conch is blown, and Sanskrit hymns are recited in praise of Lord Krishna. At Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna, special spiritual gatherings are organised at this time. Pilgrims from all over India attend these festive gatherings.

People observe a daylong fast, which is broken only at midnight, the time when Krishna is believed to have been born. The festival is a community celebration, and people visit Krishna temples, which are specially decorated and lit for the occasion. On the occasion of 'Gokulashtami', we can find kids forming a human pyramid to reach the pot full of curds (dahi-handi) and break it.

A little before midnight, devotees pour into temples to participate in the special 'Arati' and to relive the birth of Krishna. Till midnight, devotional songs are sung in anticipation of the holy birth. Special cradles are installed at temples and a small statue of the "Balgopal" is placed in them.

I couldn't do it in a grand manner this year, but still didn't want to miss out Krishna's Presence at our home.
So having bought his favourite Prasadam , butter and with little milk and Velam avil as Prasadams , Pooja was Performed.
Not to forget did of course welcome HIM home with his little "baby feets"!!
By Next Krishna Jayanthi , we will have real "baby feets" to imprint!!

HARE KRISHNA!!
