POTLUCK SPECIAL

POTLUCK SPECIAL

Ravi gave me a shock of his life that tomorrow in his office there's gonna be a POTLUCK!!

I was like, " What??" "PotLuck?"

What am I gonna do??

Its not just about making a Dish, Its about making the right dish so that people of different natives

working there can enjoy eating!!

It shouldn't be a typical South Indian Dish at the same time it shouldn't be too spicy...

As our long weekend is getting real close, I had a a couple of veggies piled up in my refirdgerator.

So I decided in making a peculiar Vegetable Rice.

I already had Carrot, Onions, Peas, Beans , Capsicum , Tomatoes...

To cut short , everything needed for Veggie Rice was there.

The only request by Ravi was not to make it too Hot as people may not be used to our spicy cooking.

I requested him to drop by home sometime an hour before potluck to collect it.

It should be atleast warm if not hot.

So took all my time preparing this dish. And made the necessary decos.

Made a secure Packing so that it doesnt fall off while Ravi drives it back to office.

Hope it mouth watering and people there enjoy!!!

I shall update with the comments once he comes back from office..

Till then its Saratha signing off!!

CAPSICUM UTHAPAM

Yesterday I wanted to something for a change with the idly-dosa batter.

Kinda got bored eating the same ol' style.

I remeber going to our favourite "Hot Spot" DOSA CAFE 2 weeks ago.

Ravi had ordered this interesting CAPSICUM UTHAPAM.

"y not try that??" , telling my mind.

Of course its not the orginal version of tha DOSA CAFE's.

Dosa Cafe's Uthapam had just onions and capsicum.

I wanted to add a little extra to it.

I landed up adding Tomatoes , Capsicum , Carrot , Coriander , Spring Onion , Red Onions.

To richen the dish even added some Cashews.

I didn't prepare any side dish as such.

Thought we could manage with idly podi.

But Ravi didn't want that too...!!! He was happy eating it as it is and added just
Simple Plain curd!!
Thank God my evening turned out gr8!!
Of course as any other day ..i did a blunder too, but thank god it was not on dinner
but rather on something else.

LIFE MADE EASY

  • When’s the best time to make a tough decision? Do it around 10am. That’s because the brain area responsible for concentration and focus is most active two to four hours after you wake up – which is about 10am for most people. Know this: Your communication skills are also best in late morning – so it’s a good time to schedule a meeting, return calls or go on a job interview.

  • Let’s talk about the best time to balance your checkbook. Pencil that in around 3pm. Why? Because body temperature begins to rise in the afternoon, speeding blood flow to the brain and increasing mental sharpness. If you don’t think your boss will buy the excuse of “I can’t work on that sales report because it cuts into peak check-balancing time,” then do it between 8 and 9pm. That’s a time when we’re alert and our brains are better suited to working with numbers.

  • Another “best time” that’ll help you plan your day: The best time to take a walk. Do it at 5pm. Your body temperature is at its highest. Which’ll boost your energy so you can walk further and faster. The further and faster you walk, the more calories you’ll burn!

  • When’s the best time to go to bed? Turn in at 11pm. Why? Because production of the sleep hormone melatonin is at its peak – making it the ideal time to get some sleep. If going to bed at 11pm won’t get you the recommended eight hours of sleep, turn in earlier. A lack of sleep raises your risk for heart disease, depression and even weight gain – so it’s not worth sacrificing your health for the sake of going to bed at the “perfect time”.

MOOLI PARATTA

With our minds all set for our trip to Canada for the MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND ,i wanted to keep the blog active in my absence.

I kinda lost concentration in the Kitchen.

No mood to cook. Well how shall I say it???

No Mood to stay longer in the Kitchen?? Yes!! Thats it!

So what should I prepare to reduce my time in Kitchen?

Well one is, I already prepared DOSA 'n' IDLY batter ready in hand.

This weekend our grocery list had Radish.

Both Ravi and I have been sticking to our diet by eating only Chapathis for Lunch and weekends alone we wave off the limits.

So I thought for a change, why not go ahead with MOOLI PARATTA.

I don't need to prepare any specific side dish for it and its simple easy and fast!!

So here we go..

Prepared the Stuffings for the Paratta with Radish. Had the chapathi dough ready too.

Morning, it didn't take more than 10 minutes to prepare 3 parattas!!

Of course I should mention the bad part too... salt turned out to be a little overdose.

So what might I use for Compensation?? Of course its side dish, PLAIN WHITE CURD!!!

Now isn't that nice??

Note: Method of Preparation will be given on request.

The Warm Weather Guide to Healthier Eating

Let the Season be Your Guide

--Courtesy: By Zach Van Hart, Writer
Looking for new, inventive ways to improve your eating habits? Warm weather can help you create better nutritional habits. From longer days to seasonal produce, the next few months are a great time to make your diet reach new heights. Breakfast Even though it’s typically the smallest meal of the day, breakfast is the most important one because it sets the tone for the entire day. What you eat, or do not eat, will determine how much you eat for lunch, dinner and snacks. If you skip breakfast, you become more likely to binge at lunch and load up on unneeded calories. So how can the pleasant weather help with eating breakfast? Set up a system with Mother Nature's virtues as the backbone. Now that the sun is out and the temperature is nice when you wake up, eat breakfast outside every morning. Pick a place – your porch, deck or favorite chair – and take 10 to 15 minutes to eat and enjoy. No need for eggs, bacon and all the fixins; cereal with skim milk, a whole-wheat bagel with low-fat cream cheese or a fruit smoothie is all you need to start the day right. Lunch This is a trouble meal for two reasons: 1. If you eat at a restaurant, it’s hard to control portion sizes, 2. It’s usually followed by sitting at a desk for the next several hours. This equates to consuming a lot of calories without burning any in return. A few more problems with a typical lunch out:
  • No complex carbohydrates (white bread or tortillas)
  • Few fruits and vegetables
  • Danger foods (French fries, fattening condiments)
The solution? Pack your lunch. You can control the portions, add fruits and veggies, make sure all of your carbohydrates are complex and avoid unhealthy snacks and sweets. Now about burning some of those calories, again take advantage of the warmer weather and eat away from the office. If you choose a spot that’s a 10-minute walk away, you’ll burn 120 calories just by walking there and back. Still unsure? Do you usually eat lunch with work buddies? Bring them along! Make a lunch team where everyone packs their lunches and heads out of the office to eat. Better yet, each person on the team could make a healthy, big batch of food once a week for the rest of team, so every day is a different, healthy lunch. Everyone wins. Dinner Keep taking advantage of the longer days and fire up that grill. Grilling out has all of the good foods that come with hitting up the drive-thru; they're just healthier versions. You can have a burger if you'd like, or go with healthier foods such as chicken or fish. You eliminate a lot of the grease that comes with frying. But who said to stop with meat? Add some veggies to the mix. Throw on a few ears of corn, or cut up and skewer some peppers, onions and tomatoes. Cooking on the grill will take up the same time as the drive-thru, and it’s cheaper, too.
Other Tips:
From the flowers blooming in your garden to the vegetables for sale at the farmers market, bright colors abound during summer. Spread that variety to your diet with a healthy dose of different-colored fruits and vegetables. The food will taste great, and the presentation will be more lively.
  • Orange – oranges, peppers, carrots, peaches
  • Yellow – apples, peppers, bananas, corn
  • Red – apples, peppers, tomatoes, strawberries
  • Purple – blueberries, grapes
  • Green – peppers, kiwi, broccoli, peas, leafy greens
  • White – cauliflower, water chestnuts
Eliminating soda has enormous benefits to your diet. Replacing it with water would be preferable, but if you really crave that sweet taste in your drink, go for the spring and summertime favorites of lemonade and ice tea. Both have less sugar and caffeine and are perfect for a hot day. Or, give water a shot, but slice up a cucumber or orange and drop the pieces in a pitcher to add some flavor.

Fried Rice

EXOTIC LUNCH

This weekend too turned out to be SPECIAL as it was once again Ravi's Request.

Ravi wanted me to make FRIED RICE , my way. He loves the flavour of Spring Onions added to it.

He even took the initiative to get the best bunch of Spring Onions.

From Last week's Grocery list I already had the rest of the ingredients for this Exotic Lunch.

The Basmati Rice was cooked just like it was prepared for my Brinjal Pulav.

The only change happened is The rice was cooked in Electric Cooker with all the Veggies.

At the end of the cooking, after letting to cool down a bit, added cut cabbage and spring onions.

(Note: Spring Onions should not be cooked instead added at the end raw. It gets steamed in the warmth of the Rice itself)

A Good Combi of Raita was prepared too.

Ravi normally adds Soya Chunks to any Rice Delites. It happened here too.

He made some for him alone ( I dont like them, for some reason!!) and added to his plate of meal.

From RECIPES

Actually I was planning to head to the Parlour for my beauty treatment.

Had told Ravi that once we are done then we'll head home and have lunch.

But with the house aroma'd with Fried Rice, Ravi couldn't wait to have it and became impatient!!

So what else then???

I had Santhosh Subramanian running on my PC.

With a fun filled entertainer on for watch and having a exotic lunch in hand.. would you wait for anything else?

Well thats what exactly we did too!!!

Little did we take Potato chips to the Lunch and hence making the Lunch even Richer in Combi.

So mouth watering?? Go ahead.. Try and Have a good lunch!!

INGI BELE BATH

Last Friday I really ran out of options as to what to make for dinner. The Lunch already turned out to be “Hot”. Had Prepared Drumstick sambhar and it turned out to be real Hot and Spicy. (That’s not how I make usually. I normally cant take the dish being “kaaram”). I wanted to do something that becomes a good compensation for the remaining sambhar. What will best suit the spicy sambhar?

I was totally blank in mind. Finally I convinced myself to make ARISI UPMA.

Got up from the sofa and went to the kitchen. This is place where I get experimental Ideas .

Why I mentioned this is because that’s what exactly happened.

To start with I thought “Why not try making ARISI UPMA with SONA MASOORI rice instead of RAW RICE?”

Ok..lets try.. Added the proportions needed for ARISI UPMA. Added Pepper, cumin seeds and was ready to beat it up in the mixie.

Here is where the trouble started…

SONA MASOORI Rice just wouldn’t pound in the mixie. All that could happen was my mixie turning off due to overload.

“Oh my God!! What did I do?? What shall I do?? I cant sit and break it in hand..!!! “

Then… “Voila!!!” I decided to turn it into PONGAL..(Of course it cant be a complete Ven Pongal as I added Thuar Dhal!!) Placed the mixture with water in cooker and prepared the Rice.

Once it was done, I started off frying ginger in ghee, cashew everything required just for a Pongal.

Here’s The turning Point!! All of a sudden I Thought “Why not add the remaining sambhar into it and make it a Bath??”

And so did .. Gosh I should say , hell of a thinking that day!!

Finally by the end of the preparation I came out with a Dish That looked lot like Bisebele Bath. “Ok I can tell Ravi this is Bisebele Bath”

I wanted to taste it to make sure salt was enough. To my surprise when I had one spoon in my mouth I was wondering what to call the Dish!!!

It tasted like all the 3 Dishes : ARISI UPMA , PONGAL & BISEBELE BATH!!

I left the naming Ceremony to my husband. Let him eat and call it whatever he wants it !!

He was having a good laugh over the dish but at the same time Appreciated me for a wonderful dish. (Yes friends It looks like It came out tasty too!!) He called it the INGI BELE BATH!!!

So now that u know what I landed up with.. U can try but I should mention this strong.

ONLY IF YOU HAVE RUN OUT OF OPTIONS SHOULD U TRY THIS!!! OTHERWISE IT’S A SERIOUS NO NO.

Make This Bath and Post me options to name the dish suitable.

Enjoy Pals!!

There are certain vegetables that you may be avoiding.

Like if you’re carb-conscious, you might think potatoes will blimp you up.

Or you might think that iceberg lettuce has zero nutritional value.

We’re going to explode some of those veggie myths, courtesy of Prevention magazine:

  • Myth #1: White potatoes make you fat. Nope. The truth is – one medium baked potato is only 161 calories, but has four grams of stomach-filling fiber. Cooked, then chilled potatoes are packed with resistant starch, which can help you lose weight – because they pass right through you. Studies also show that the chemicals in potatoes improve heart health, boost immunity, lower blood pressure, and protect against cancer. Just leave off the high-fat toppings, like butter, sour cream, and bacon bits - and eat your potato – skin and all - with salsa instead.

  • Another veggie myth: Carrots are full of sugar. Not exactly. One cup of chopped raw carrots contains just 52 calories, and 12 grams of carbs - fewer than you’d get from a cup of milk, or a medium size piece of fruit. Half of the “carrot carbs” are complex carbs, which help you feel full longer. The other half come from natural sugar, which is better than the processed sugar in candy bars. Carrots are also packed with fiber and vitamins, which boost blood sugar control and colon health.

  • Another veggie myth: Iceberg lettuce has zero nutrients. Not true. Iceberg has lots of good-for-you chemicals, like vision-boosting vitamin A, and bone-healthy vitamin K. In fact, studies show that adults who eat one serving a day of any type of lettuce have the lowest rates of hip fracture.

  • The final veggie myth: Corn is nothing more than carbs. Yes, corn’s got carbs, but they’re the best kind: high-quality complex carbs. The plant also has little in common with high fructose corn syrup, a sweetener made from corn that has all the nutrition and fiber processed out of it. In fact, corn does double-duty as both a veggie and a whole grain, so it’s loaded with fiber. Corn also helps your heart, and helps prevent age-related macular degeneration.

Brush your Teeth

If you forgot to brush your teeth last night...
If you forgot to brush your teeth last night, did you decide this morning to throw in the towel and never brush your teeth again? Since you're obviously a slob who doesn't have enough self- discipline to remember to brush your teeth, why bother brushing them at all if you forgot to last night?

Of course not.

So if you had ice cream for dinner last night, or didn't exercise yesterday, or gained a pound this week, don't throw in the towel! Make a healthier choice for dinner tonight by eating something lean. Go for a short walk. Weigh in again next week.

Just do NOT give up.

Some months ago we planned a sudden trip to CLEAR LAKE.

It was a wonderful getaway and a nice spot for relaxation.

Clear Lake State Park is on the shores of California’s largest freshwater lake.
The area is popular for all kinds of water recreation, including swimming, fishing, boating and water-skiing.

HISTORY OF THE PARK

Several thousand years ago, a landslide blocked natural drainage from a valley into the Russian River.
The water rose until it found an outlet through Cache Creek into the Sacramento River to form Clear Lake, the largest natural lake entirely within California.
Most of the water comes from runoff. Some comes from springs in Soda Bay.

LOCATION & DIRECTIONS

The Entrance to the park is 3.5 miles northeast of KELSEYVILLE on Soda Bay Road, north of Calistoga in the wine country.
But that would have taken a longer time for us to get there.
The usual entrance and immediate one would be if your resort has the access to the lake.
Thats the way we got. We booked a wonderful resort called THE LAKE ESCAPE RESORT.

LAKE ESCAPE RESORT s the place to stay if you want to fish, play, or just relax on California’s largest freshwater lake.
It is close to town and just minutes by boat to all the fun at Konocti Harbor.
The best fishing on Clear Lake is on the south end, around Lake Escape Resort.
This resort is an ideal place for anglers because of the ample space for boat parking, easy ramp access and clean, comfortable rooms.
I loved playing with the Ducks and Canadian Geeses. The look from the Pier was too awesome.
You should try visiting this place too!!

HOW TO HANDLE ANGER

  • Give your head a vacation. Picture yourself in a calm and serene place. If you can't get there mentally sitting at your desk, step outside for a minute or get a drink of water. It may be cliche, but it works.

  • Create a comfort zone. Bring personal things into your environment at work that make you happy, like a picture of your dog, or a card that a friend sent you. These things will help remind you that you have a life outside of the office.

  • Talk it out. Give yourself at least half an hour to calm down, then talk to the person who's upsetting you. But use forward thinking statements like, "how can we prevent this from happening again." Look for a solution, not revenge.

Other Uses for Olive Oil

Olive oil isn’t only tasty and good for you – it’s an all-purpose item! Here are some lesser-known uses for this Mediterranean staple, courtesy of Health magazine.

  • Earache relief. Dr. Rachel Lewis, a pediatrician at Columbia University Medical Center, says warm olive oil can soothe your achy ear – or your child’s! Simply use a syringe to put two to four drops of warm oil in the ear. Remember – only do this for your child if they’re over two years old.
  • Polishing. Stainless steel appliances are magnets for fingerprint smudges, but you can make those marks vanish by applying a very light layer of olive oil. According to Catherine Houska, consultant to the Specialty Steel Association, you want to use a soft cloth and rub it on in a circular motion.
  • Olive oil can condition your hair! Having an oily head may not seem like a good idea, but you can revive damaged hair with this treatment – it comes from John Masters, who owns John Masters Organics hair and skin care lines. He says: Saturate your hair with olive oil, then wrap it with a warm towel for 20 minutes. Then shampoo, rinse and throw a little conditioner on for a few minutes. Your hair will be shiny and healthy – and you won’t have to give your hairdresser a dime!

VEGETABLE PUFFS

I was just idling my time this week. Wanted to do something nice and something that I havent tried before. I had never used the electric oven in my apartment.I am very fond of VEGETABLE PUFFS.

So I gave it a try. The only major work in this is the Pastry Spread. After a long search,

I finally found the right pastry roll nearby my apartment. The pastry spread found is named PEPPERIDGE PASTRY PUFF FARM brand. Believe me this brand is really doing good.So what are we waiting for... Let's start ahead!!

Ingredients:-

Boiled Potatoes -3
Chopped Onion-1
Chopped Green Chillies -3
Green Peas - 1/2 cup
Ginger-Garlic paste -1/2 tsp
Turmeric Powder -a pinch
Red chilly powder -1/2 tsp.
Garam masala -1 tsp
Coriander leaves chopped - 1 tbsp
Jeera seeds - 1/2 tsp
Lemon juice - 1 tsp
Salt - to taste
Oil - as needed

Method:-

Mash potatoes lightly with hand and keep aside.Heat oil in pan and allow jeera seeds to splutter.Add onion ,ginger-garlic paste, green chillies and salt and saute for a while.Add all the masala powders and again saute for a few minutes.Add mashed potatoes and green peas and mix well.Simmer for few more minutes .Switch off the burner and add coriander leaves and lemon juice.Mix well and keep aside. And now the filling is ready to use.Now just put the filling in the pastry sheets after cutting it to any desired shape. The pastry sheets should be rolled thin before cutting…you can roll it just like chappathi. After the filling is done fold it over and stick the ends together using water.Bake it in a preheated 400F oven for 15- 20 mts or until brown.

Focus For a Simple Long Life

Neither kids nor grandparents are time bound... You agree with me?? Here, let me tell you some secret for long life:

Secret to long life ----> Be kind and forgive people.

Secret to stay healthy ----> Eat when hungry, walk ,sleep when sleepy.

Secret to a healthy marriage ----> Marry a Good One.

All these looks very obvious for a healthy long life. But with the world spinning so fast and out of control , we hardly have time to these lessons and they seem to not cut it anymore. But does this mean we have to give up??

No Practise. Practise makes a man perfect. We need to practise more to let our ears open and act kind.

The power of unforgiveness and not listening is more dominating as we live in a world of overindulgence. It has become very characterstic that forgiving is meant for saints, listening for therapisits only. The people with good examples of life and personnel inventory are now found in limited places like senior centres and isolated homes.

We need to get the best of our life , the good personnel, we need to head towards these homes and make a favour for ourselves.

When we get to know the secret of long life of a 100 year old lady/ lad , go out and start living like that because these people have the best experiences of the worst situations!!!

THINKING HURTS

Hi Webaholics,
Nice to meet you all once again through this wonderful opportunity..Well still wandering in my mind what to do? what to do?Time is just idling away... Today it pricked me suddenly ...Have you women out there, everr realiseed that we sometimes are never honest to the people near and dear to us???
Well I don't blame US for that alone!! Sometime situations force us to talk that way to avoid future misunderstandins..Howeverr honest we try to be , at one point or the other we land up saying some silly excuses to avoid later quarrels.Well my point of addressing this is.. Have you ever thought for a second what kind of incomplete life and uncomfortable it makes you??
Some realise this pricking very often. Some actually have it but there are other commitments around which actually makes this feeling look small.I was just thinking what if we just take one day in a month (to start with) exclusively for ourselves. It should be just me , me , ME. Try it Pals, really effective!! Most of the times when i am down and upset, this kinda helps me a lot. In that way I don't have to pass on my grudge to my related ones. I can be normal as possible.Somethings , sometimes you feel like sharing it to persons just to let it out of your chest. But how trust worthy is the other person?? At some time of your life it can turn against you!!
So here's what I normally do:
Whenever something is bothering me too too much. I just sit all alone in my room with a paper and pen.
Write even the silliest thought running in my head!! From Pin to Politics.
Whatever is crushing my heart.. whatever is squeezing inside..
For some this writing turns out to be a story or poem.
For others , its just a scribble!Once everything is out..
I read it for my self once to realise how stupid i have been and what idiotic thoughts are these..Then shred them to pieces!!! My worries are shredded too.!!
My heart turns Light! No Worries for the moment.. and no need to pass the grudge to my husband or any family member!!!Now isn't that nice??
Well it may or maynot work for some, but for me it sure does!!Why am i saying this now? Its nowhere apprpariate to my blog??? Well who care? i wanted to share and I am doing it!!After all Blogs are nothing but our thoughts in words..Infact I am planning to post some of silliest thoughts in future..!!Keep looking for more...

Why do wee need Exercise?

Have you heard many saying exercise???
But why? Does Exercise really help?? Many people expect magic out of their trials.. They expect to get the result right the next day they start..and when thats not working..they quit..How is it possible?
We need to keep working on our goal. Suddenly last week I too felt the need to exercise. I was shocked to see my BMI read "OVER"!! And not that it affect health alone, its the prime cause for other disorders in our body..like heart attack,BP..etc.
This is not the Age to get the feel of this disorders, isn't it??

Let me tell the story of Mrs.Shy here..She planned to start her workout as she was getting sad day to day seeing her health deteroit. Often she has this shyness to go and workout in the fitness room available in her wonderful housing community. Feeling that it might be too crowded or having a mentality that gymers there might take a laugh, she always never prefers it. But lately , after the scale measurment, she decided come what may and overcome the ill thought and locked her doors and walked to the fitness room. To her surprise, being it a weekday and also @ 9 am when most of the people would be there on the roads to office, no one was there!! Just an elderly guy and maintance people working on the A/C. She didn't care for all that and started workout!! Boy What a relief!!! She decided to continue her assignment henceforth..

One another Inspiration to start this workout was" JT"... what's "JT"??
One radio Jockey ,quite famous in US, John Tesh has so many advices for many listerners like me. So many questions that rumble inside my mind,is often answered in his show even without me addressing them.. thats coz, I think those questions are very very common. Well I recently bought his book called Intelligence for Life.
I prefer to share these thoughts with you fellow readers.I am sure it will help you as much as it helped me.
So now since my topic today is about EXERCISE..Lets see what and why JT says it important to exercise..

Here are some reasons y you should enjoy exercising:

*You’ll get more done. When you exercise, your body releases hormones that increase alertness, energy, and stamina.
*Better brain function. Breaking a sweat improves your ability to concentrate and research from the University of California finds that walking just 30 minutes a day cuts your risk of Alzheimer’s disease in half.
*The 3rd reason to get moving: More sleep. In a Stanford University study, people who did a half-hour of cardio four times a week fell asleep faster and slept longer than those who didn’t.
*One last reason to exercise: It relieves stress. When we’re tense, our bodies pump out chemicals that increase heart rate and energy levels. That’s great if you’re running from a tiger, but a problem if you’re stuck in traffic. Exercise processes those same chemicals in a healthier way, enabling you to ultimately relax, and reducing your chances of getting a chronic illness.

So what are you waiting for?? Go Get those Calories down!!! Trust Me , Every Sweat is Worth it!!

What does your ringtone tell about you?

It’s more revealing than you think. Here’s an expert analysis of the tones on your phone...

*If you have an older song, like the 60's and 70's, you’re a traditionalist. A Psychologist says people who have older songs as their ringtone are also independent thinkers. You’re saying you don’t need to follow the trends to feel confident.

*If you use the ringtone that came with the phone, psychotherapists say you’re down to earth. You live simply – and you’re too busy to bother with your cell phone ringtone. You also tend to be loyal – you’ve had the same friends for years.

*If you have a current hit song, you’re adventurous and love variety. And just like you change your ringtone often, you probably also change your fashion. You’re a people person who loves to be “in the know”.

*If you have a classical ringtone, you’re refined and sophisticated. But it also may mean you’re stressed out. Because a classical song – even coming through your phone – can be used as a way to soothe your frazzled nerves.

So... Tell me your ringtone 'n I'll tell you who you are!!!

UNUSUAL TREATMENTS

Not all cures come from the doctor’s office! Here’s a list of unusual but effective treatments, from The Health Watch Center:

Cherries make you stronger. They don’t work like spinach does for Popeye, but in one study, drinking 12 ounces of cherry juice after a tough workout increased muscle mass and reduced aches and pains the next day.

Your cell phone can help you quit smoking. In a University of Auckland study, people who received daily encouragement by text message doubled their chances of kicking the habit. So, set a quit date and ask your family and friends to text you until you’re smoke-free for 30 days.
The 3rd crazy cure that’ll improve your life:

Blue light fixes bad breath. Researchers at the Forsyth Institute found that exposing your mouth to blue light kills problem bacteria. So, replace your regular bathroom bulb with a blue one and brush and floss everyday.

Music beats back pain. According to a study done at Sheffield University, people who listened to music for an hour a day reduced their back pain by more than 20 percent. Turns out, music is a natural muscle relaxant, so it eases pain without medication.

A Girl's Perception of Her Social Status Affects Her Weight

Is your teenage girl popular at school? If not, she’s more likely to gain weight. Now, we already know that being overweight can lead to being socially isolated for teenagers, but according to the New York Times, a new study finds that the opposite is true, too. A girl’s perception of her social status affects her weight.
Researchers at Harvard University studied 4,500 teenage girls. They recorded their body mass index, and then asked them to rank themselves from one to ten in terms of school popularity. The question was, “Where would you be on a ladder if the students at the top have the most respect, and no one wants to hang out with the ones at the bottom?” Two years later, the girls who’d rated themselves a four out of 10 on the popularity scale, or lower, had gained the most weight - an average of eleven pounds. In fact, girls who thought they were low in the pecking order had a 70% higher risk of gaining excess weight.
The researchers adjusted the data to account for variables like family income, diet and TV viewing habits. Still, the link between a girl’s perceptions of her own popularity and her odds of gaining weight were strong. So what can a parent do? First, encourage your daughter to eat well and get active. Also, look at her social network, because even your best efforts can be undermined by the mean girls at school. You should encourage your daughter to enroll in group activities outside of school so she can make friends who enjoy the same things she does. Because when girls are in supportive social environments, they feel more secure and accepted and that could go a long way to helping them accept themselves AND their body.
